Chapter 4

ch4-blog-notext_02 What better way to follow a chapter about rebuildable atomizers than to discuss how to build a coil for these types of atomizers!!Building your coils can be difficult at first, but don’t worry. Just like everything else, practice makes perfect. The best thing about knowing how to build your own coils is, it’s convenient! And in all reality, saves you lots of money.

A coil is the wire that is connected to the base, which in turn is connected to the battery or mod. When the battery is powered, the wires heat up and turn the e-liquid into vapor. Without a coil, there’s nothing to produce vapor. Coils are predominantly made with kanthal but can also be made with nickel or titanium depending on your personal preference. Nickel and titanium wire are only used for building when you’re attaching it to a mod that has temperature control functionality.

Building is the verb used when making a coil. This is done by wrapping wire tightly around a screwdriver to form a coil. Building coils take time and patience so don’t get frustrated when the first few don’t come out too good looking. The most important aspect when it comes to building is knowing build safety. If you’re building for a regulated mod, the manual that comes in the box will tell you the minimum resistance for that particular mod. You’re probably asking, what makes the difference in resistance when building a coil. The answer to that is what size screwdriver your using, what gauge wire, as well as how many wraps. The less wraps, the lower the resistance.

A wick is just the material inside a coil to hold and deliver e-liquid. This is usually made from cotton but can also be made with silica or mesh depending on what atomizer you’re using. Using mesh is mainly for building on genesis style atomizers.

What you’ll need:

  • Kanthal wire
  • 2mm Screwdriver (most rebuildable atomizers come with one)
  • Additional screwdriver or allen key that fits your atomizer screws
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Wire cutters
  • Scissors
  • Organic cotton
  • E-liquid

Wrapping Your Coil

Step 1: You’ll need about 3-4 in. of wire to build one coil. Place the wire above the 2mm screwdriver as close to the handle as possible and hold it firmly with your thumb.

Step 2: Then you want to start wrapping your coil until you’ve reached the desired number of wraps. You want the wraps to be as close together as possible without overlapping.

Step 3: Once you’ve reached the desired number of wraps, both leads should be facing the same direction.

Installing Your Coil:

Step 1: Take the deck of your RDA and loosen the screws just enough so that the wires can fit through. You don’t want to take the screws completely out because they’re easy to lose and hard to put back in when you’ve only got one free hand.

Step 2: Then with your coil still around the screwdriver, put one lead through the negative and the other through the positive.

Step 3: Try to position your coil towards the center of the deck. Once you’ve got it centered, you can now tighten your screws. Be careful not to tighten them too much because you could cut the wire and have to start all over.

Step 4: Now that you’ve tightened your screws, you can carefully position your coil more towards the center if it isn’t already by moving the screwdriver in whichever direction needed. Once you’re satisfied with this step, you can now remove the screwdriver and cut the extra wire off so that the leads are as close to the negative/positive posts as possible.

Eliminating Any Hotspots:

Briefly fire your mod until your coil is completely lit. Once your coil is lit, let go of the fire button and compress your coils with the pliers. Repeat this step until your coil lights up evenly from the center towards the outer wraps. Another way is to stroke the coils with a pair of tweezers. Once your coils light up evenly from the inside out, you’re all set to move on to the next step.

Wicking Your Coil:

Step 1: You want a piece of cotton that can fit snug inside of your coil, not to lose and not too tight.  Make sure that there is enough cotton that when folded, it can reach the bottom of the deck.

Step 2: Tuck the cotton under your coil.

Priming Your Cotton:

Simply saturate your cotton with your favorite juice, making sure to go over the coil so that the cotton inside is also saturated. Then place your RDA sleeve onto your deck and repeatedly fire your mod until your cotton is dried out but not burnt. Once you’ve done that place your cap back on, add more of your favorite juice, and vape on!

Chapter 5

When buying your first e-cig, there are lots of things you should consider. Like whether or not you should purchase it in store or maybe online and why. Or all the items or products you’ll need to get you going when looking into becoming a vaper.

When you purchase at your local vape shop:

  • In person conversations about products and safety of different products
  • Hands on experience
  • You get to taste the eLiquid before you buy it
  • If you need to return a product, you can take it right back to the store instead of having to mail it back

When you purchase online:

  • Products delivered right at your door
  • Better chance for getting lower prices
  • Online stores are open 24 hours
  • More selection for various products

Depending on what you’re interested in getting, the necessities can differ. If you’re buying a regulated mod, a lot of them have internal batteries. These that are internal batteries, usually come with a charger. If the batteries are external, you’ll need to purchase batteries as well as a charger for those batteries. Another item you’ll need is, juice! Without juice, you can’t vape! If you’re buying a tank, you’ll need to purchase extra coils. If you’re buying a rebuildable atomizer, you might want to learn how to build your own coils. You can learn by different ways; in a vape shop, YouTube videos, and I’ve also written a blog on basic building steps! So to make it short, you’ll need a mod, an atomizer, batteries (if not internal), charger, and eLiquid.

Let’s face it… nothing beats personalized service. Especially if it is going to be your very first vape gear purchase. Another huge pro when it comes to just going to your local vape shop is, you get the chance to test your juice before you buy it! I mean, who want to buy juice that you’ve never tried. Probably not many. Now, if you already know exactly what you’re looking for, online could be the best route. This is because you can shop around hassle free to search for the best price. It all just dwindles down to what you’re looking for (or if you even know what you’re looking for), convenience, and price!

The Vape Tank Evolution

The Vape Tank Evolution

Vape tanks have changed a great deal over the past few years. They have gone from simple cartridges to pieces of equipment that can be customized entirely. Vape tanks have gone from a simple factory filled cartridge to devices that can be rebuilt and filled with custom flavoring. Depending on the device, you’ll have many options to choose from in the vape tank you select to use.

Cartridges were one of the original e-liquid tanks made. These tanks were used for electronic cigarettes or cig-alikes. These were simply little plastic tubes filled with cotton holding liquid that was filled in a factory. These tanks would be pushed on to an atomizer which was the heating portion that produces vapor in the tank. They didn’t allow for any custom flavors or variation to customize the vaping experience.

The cartomizer was the next type of device produced. This was the same thing as a cartridge, however, the atomizer was attached. The atomizer being attached to the tank allowed for a new atomizer to be used each time the tank was changed for a full one. This increased the vaping experience by giving more flavorful vapor. These tanks are still produced today for cig-alike devices, and in most cases still are not able to be altered or filled with custom flavors.

Cartridges and cartomizers both prevented the very much expansion in the vaping industry. The tanks were produced by the company who made the battery and they usually have very few flavors to offer. The clearomizer was a huge change in the tank system of vaping devices. It would address some of the limitations of the cartridge system.

The clearomizer is used on portable vaporizers sometimes called vape pens. The tanks range in this category from factory filled and disposable to a device that can be made completely custom. The clearomizer that’s already filled when you buy it is stuck to the same limitations as the previous clearomzier. Some clearomizers are able to be filled with any of the many flavor options and hold varying amounts of e-liquid. They come in varying colors and designs. One large change was the introduction of glass tanks, you were no longer stuck to having only plastic. What makes these tanks so unique is they come in a rebuild-able variety. The devices allow for the coil to be replaced, and the cotton around the coil to be changed which allows the tank to be used longer than something disposable. They also contain wicks which can be changed. These parts being able to be changed saves the customer money, and allows for the tank to work like new even if you’re changing the flavor to something completely different than the tank held before. Another new feature found in the clearomizer tank system is varying the resistance in the coil. These variations are not as large as in tanks used on MODs but they do allow for a more custom user experience.

Tanks used on MODs would work very similarly to the clearomizer. There were not to many features added in these devices but the changes do make a large difference. These devices most notable entered vaping into the sub-ohm territory. This was done using changeable coils which also come in a rebuild-able version. Sub-ohm vaping allows for very strong flavor and large vape cloud production.

Vape tanks have evolved over the years. They’ve gone from something that came filled and disposable to something that could be used time after time and with many flavors. It’s clear to see that there have been a great amount of evolution in vape tanks.

Math and Chemistry Matter When it Comes to Vaping

Math and Chemistry Matter When It Comes to Vaping

While you don’t have to calculate mathematics, your drag may depend on it. Consumers do not diagram electricity flow to blow clouds like those coming from a hookah, but, how they pull the vapor, as they inhale, comes down to customizing devices which figure ohms, volts, and watts, in an equation to heat elements. Combustion, a behavior of particles is relating chemistry, but so are the aldehydes, aerosols, and assorted aroma liquids, that fill MOD tanks, ensuring the best Vape upon firing a switch.

The battery operated electrical current has been described as a funnel attached to a hose. Water flowing is the electricity, and when the water flows fast it represents friction causing an electrical course of heat. Water measured in gallons, electricity flow is measured in amps, and rating and more precise measuring power require watts, amps, and volts, with ohms, to hold-back flow. Ohm’s slows down electricity flow, providing numerical brakes, so the course won’t get so hot.

The tube found in the middle of a calibrated voltage battery encased in a box is known as a MOD. Homemade kits with science knowledge, or not, created do-it-yourself (DIY) units worth imitating. YouTube artists explain theories on how and why manufactured and homemade units persist. A lot of attention is paid to DIY creations; positive and negative tiny wires require finger dexterity–or they will short out. But do these units get the same result as already packaged units, that are affordable, but still out of reach to many? Spreading more math and science information will influence the public and push the industry safer. Horror stories blowing up the blower exist. Nothing stops a smoker; organics are as popular as ever. Looking at consumer risk can be a great selling point to the middle-man who’s part of the scene and on the look-out for the next great invention.

The Vape Community Can Be One Fun Group on the Web

vaping community

The vaping community is growing in leaps and bounds. It’s a community of individuals from all walks of life. Like any growing community, there’s a desire to bond in commonality. There’s the need to interact and spread awareness of this smoking alternative.

Since vaping is a relatively new option for traditional smokers, there’s a desire for those who have found enjoyment in vaping to introduce and assist newcomers. Many vapers have even gone as far as donating e-cigs and various accessories to assist others in stopping smoking. The easiest, quickest and most efficient way to get the word out? Social media.

In the vast sea of multimedia options, vaping has taken to venues such as Facebook, Youtube and various social media groups. There are blogs and other social sights that allow vapers to engage in fun and enlightening conversation about their interests. Attention is being drawn to this topic through forums and even giveaways.

The majority of people interesting in trying electronic cigarettes want to quit or reduce smoking. It is easy for them to go online and find information on the topic. However, with the abundance of availability on social media, these individuals have the option of interacting with the vaping community. This opens the door for questions and answers, developing friendships with other vapers.

Social media has opened the topic up on a global level. People are able to share interests and experiences from all over the world. Since this is a niche market, it may be hard to find local people with the same interests. Being able to talk and relate to people from any location provides vapers with an interactive and rewarding experience.

Whether you’re a Youtube, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram fan, there’s an e-cigarette or vapor group for you. Cool photos, fun discussion groups and the ability to interact and discussing vaping is right at your fingertips. There’s a lot going on within the realm of social media to support and encourage those interested in world of vaping.

Leaving Vapor Trails

Leaving Vapor Trails

Most who vape claim that it doesn’t have much of an odor, but, you really can’t trust your own senses after a few tokes because your nose will have gotten used to any smell by then. Quite a few non-vapers don’t notice a thing even when they walk into an enclosed area seconds after you exhale, then again, others will smell something and just not realize what it is.

If you’re in a position where the smell of vapor is a concern, a few simple precautions can help you avoid any problems. If you’ve a window, open it, and if you’ve a fan, turn it on. The smell of vaping may be less intense than smoking, but it’s still part of the atmosphere until it’s had a chance to disperse. Vapor odor has a lot to do with the ingredients of the e-liquid itself. Example: Propylene Glycol (PG) mixes leave a stronger smell than those using a Vegetable Glycerin (VG), so when being discrete is a must, be careful when choosing your supplies. If you enjoy the taste of fresh foods, try a berry flavor. The only thing anyone is going to smell then will be something fruity, and delicious.

Yes, vapor does leave a trail under certain circumstances but it generally disappears in moments so this isn’t really an issue for most vapers. We’ve all seen airplanes with streamers of cloud (known as contrails) following them, and though the reasons a vaporizer can leave a trail of its own follow the same logic, choose your location wisely, and it should never be a problem. Cold, clear air promotes vapor trails, and when humidity is high, they tend to hang around longer than you might think if there’s no breeze to disperse it.

When you get right down to it, vaping is obviously a better choice than smoking, and choosing not to vape because of worrying about leaving a scent, or vapor trail isn’t doing you any favors. Whether discretion is a must or not, adapting vaping habits to your surroundings is easier than you think, plus a much better option than polluting your body with smoking and trashy carcinogens.

Generations of Vapers Coming Together

Vaping Generations

Many hobbies or pastimes tend to develop “generations” of members within the ranks of their respective communities. Usually, these are simplified as “old” and “young,” or people who’ve been doing the activity since, or close to its inception, and those who’ve joined more recently. The longer the activity is participated in, the more generations of users can be added. In almost every other hobby, pastime, community, etc there’s a slight animosity between the “old Guys” and the “new breed” – but vaping is an exception to this rule.

Because vaping is so rapidly evolving and people are flocking toward it, you don’t have as much of the old/new split. A split may exist somewhere else, like for instance between those who use regulated or mechanical MODs, but the vaping community seems to welcome new members into its folds with slightly more open arms than others. You can now go to a vape lounge and connect with people whom you might not have any other things in common other than vaping, but that seems to be enough. In addition, it’s rarely seen that older vapers “call out” the new breed for rookie mistakes. Everyone seems to remember that they were, in fact, the new guy or girl and had a lot of questions of their own.

Not that it creates a divide, but there are generally two reasons people get started in vaping: Because they want to try and quit smoking tobacco all together, or they just want to try something new. This creates a culture or a point of bonding between people who are 50+ and have smoked all their lives, and 21 year old people who are looking for something new to do, possibly with their friends. They might be at a public place and vaping next to someone their parents or grandparents age, but they have in common the fact that they’re vaping.

Vaping has truly created a tight knit community. Whereas in the past, individuals might have gone to their local pub or tobacconist to meet and socialize over a common pastime (either drinking or smoking), nowadays many people who partake in it are congregating in vape shops and lounges. But, these establishments didn’t just pop up over night. There had to be enough of a community built up in the area for it to make a sensible business decision, and these stores could not flourish as they have if they didn’t have the participation of several generations of vapers. All vapers share one, common thing: That they vape, and that’s enough to bring them together over vaping.

These days, it seems all too common that we, as people, are being torn one way or another. We’re not bonding and forming communities as we used to – we’re heavily focused on the individual. Vaping seeks, inadvertently, to overcome these boundaries that would normally prevent us from socializing with one another over a common consumable. Just think how you would feel to be the only vaper in your place of work, only one day to find than an older (or younger) co-worker also vaped. You’d be more likely to start spending time with that person for no other reason than you’d likely be vaping together.

There’s a Fill Line to Your Tank

Getting the perfect vape out of your set-up is easier than you think. One of the simplest and most important aspects of creating the perfect vape is by properly filling your tank. You will see that most tanks have milliliter lines printed on the side of it. This shows you how much e-liquid is in it at any given time.

It’s Important to Not Overfill Your Tank

This means you should not fill it with e-liquid past the highest milliliter marking. Making sure you don’t overfill your tank will ensure that you create perfect vapes and your set-up stays in good working order.

What Happens When You Overfill?

Overfilling can potentially cause damage to your battery through leakage. At the very least, overfilling can prevent your battery from connecting properly with the tank because e-liquid has leaked onto the firing pin of your battery. If there’s e-liquid in the connection, your set-up won’t produce a good vape.

Overfilling can cause leakage out of the top of the tank. E-liquid may seep out of where the mouthpiece connects to the tank and make a big mess. You may also end up getting it in your mouth.

Quick Fix

If you’ve overfilled, you can try to pour a little out of the top onto a paper towel. Just pour out enough to get the e-liquid down to the top millimeter line.

If e-liquid has dripped into the bottom part of your atomizer and is collecting on the firing pin of the battery, it’s critical to clean it out for optimal performance. This is easily solved, simply unscrew the battery from the atomizer and clean the bottom of your atomizer and the top of your battery. Twist the corner of a paper towel or a q-tip into the areas where there is leaked e-liquid and soak up the extra juice.

Making sure to keep your tank filled with the proper level of e-liquid will guarantee you’ll have an awesome vaping experience.

4 Tips For Increasing Your Throat Hit

The feeling you get at the back of your throat as well as in your lungs is what’s known as a throat hit. Hits that’re too strong can be painful and even damaging, while weak hits might feel like you didn’t really inhale anything. A satisfying throat hit is considered to be one of the biggest factors in a positive vaping experience for new and experienced vapers alike. Even though everyone has different preferences, there are some things that can be done to get the best throat hit for you.

Find The Right Flavor
One of the best places to start for anyone who is or wants to be a serious vaper, is the flavor of e-liquid being used as well as the quality. There’s a massive variety of different flavors to choose from, so finding the right one for you that can produce an adequate amount of vapor and has enough flavor will be critical in getting the best throat hit possible.

Finding The Right Nicotine Level
A factor that’s sometimes overlooked, is the nicotine levels in the e-liquids being used. While preferences will vary from person to person, especially seasoned vapers, the basic rule is that the higher the nicotine level of the liquid, the stronger the throat hits will be. There are also a few different additives that can be used to increase a throat hit, like grain alcohol or lactic acid, but they’re quite rare in comparison with nicotine. Some can also be irritating for the respiratory tract, so proper research should be done before trying them.

Taking Proper Puffs
An important factor when trying to get the optimal throat hit is how to take a proper puff. Most people who smoke cigarettes take quick puffs to get a good throat hit. This isn’t the case when vaping, as quick puffs will usually not be effective. For a better throat hit, you will need to take longer, slower puffs and not rush to exhale. This is usually somewhere between 3 and 6 seconds.

Propylene Glycol Liquid
There are two different bases used for e-liquids. The first is Propylene Glycol (PG), and the other is Vegetable Glycerin (VG). Propylene Glycol makes for thinner liquid, and produces a more distinguished throat hit with less vapor. Vegetable Glycerin makes thicker liquid that gives a softer throat hit with a lot of vapor.

In the end, the key to obtaining the best throat hit possible is gained through experimentation. Everyone has different preferences, which means there is no one right answer. Try as many flavors as possible, while also picking better quality liquids. Make sure to always keep your device clean and charged, so it works as efficiently as possible for better hits. Higher voltage devices can also provide a stronger throat hit with warmer liquid.
